I hate to go and leave this pretty sight. However, it's the last day of class, and that means we kind of have to wrap things up. It's been fun. You've been a great class. I feel incredibly lucky to have had you guys to work with in my first semester at MCA. Let's give this blogging project one more try while we can.
Best wishes. Keep in touch!

What time is it?
Thanksgiving is upon us. Of course everyone is super busy with final projects, holiday shopping, and perhaps even playing a little catch-up if for a class or two. It sure does seem as if time has just flown by this semester, right? I hope the semester's been a great one for all of you.
If you're like me, maybe you're starting to think about the big picture a little more. What have I learned this semester? Have I acquired any new skills, made any new friends, or gotten any better at what I hope is going to become my life's work? You friendly Writing 1 professor has certainly been thinking a lot about where we've been as a class so far and what's happening next as the fall semester winds down. You could say that the holidays offer an opportunity for reflection. And what better forum is there for this kind of reflective thinking and writing than the good old-fashioned weblog or "blog" (as the young people say)?
For your next couple of assignments, I'm going to have you guys publish some of your favorite writing online. I think publishing on Blogger will prove to be a helpful exercise in getting everyone more comfortable thinking about writing as a true form of communication with the outside world. I also think it's a good idea for you guys to be more of an active audience for one another; there's been some beautiful writing going on in Writing 1 this semester. I think a lot of people deserve to have their work read by their peers and responded to enthusiastically. Anyway, it'll be nice to have another forum where people in Writing 1 can be supportive of one another. We'll have closed blogs, so this should be a safe forum.
By the end of the semester, everyone will have posted a couple of essays on Blogger. You'll also provide comments on other people's work. Of course you're free to post more frequently.
Stay tuned for more details.

Only Connect
Here's a link to William Cronon's wonderful article, "Only Connect": The Goals of Liberal Education.
A History of English in Ten Minutes
I like to get started each semester by providing a better understanding of the dynamic and often frustrating tongue we've all come to know and love. Here's a brilliant and quite funny animated history of our very own English language.... in ten minutes. Enjoy!
Welcome to Writing 1
You're looking at Memphis College of Art's Writing 1 blog. Yay! This site it still in development, but we're pretty excited that it's getting out there and are hoping for the best. Many thanks to everyone who's supported this endeavor to put MCA student writing online for educational purposes.
